We Tested 10 AI Coding Tools

👤 Admin • 📅 Oct 07, 2026 • ⏱️ 2 min read

From bug fixing to building full apps, we tested 10 AI coding tools to find the real winners.

Introduction: The Developer\'s New Toolkit

AI coding tools promise to 10x your productivity, but can they actually handle complex, legacy codebases? We took a messy, undocumented React and Node.js application and unleashed 10 different AI tools on it to see which ones could refactor it without breaking the build.

The Experiment

We gave each tool three tasks: 1) Find and fix a memory leak in the Node backend. 2) Refactor a massive 1,000-line React component into smaller hooks. 3) Write comprehensive unit tests for the authentication flow.

The Winners

1. Cursor IDE

Cursor blew the competition out of the water. Because it indexes the entire project, it immediately found the memory leak by tracing a variable across three different files. Its inline diff editor made refactoring the React component feel like magic.

2. GitHub Copilot

Copilot was excellent at the third task: writing unit tests. Because unit tests follow highly predictable patterns, Copilot was able to generate 20 robust tests in a matter of seconds.

3. Tabnine

Tabnine deserves an honorable mention for enterprise users. Because it can be run completely locally or in a VPC, it is the clear winner for developers working at banks or healthcare companies who legally cannot send their code to OpenAI's servers.

The Verdict

AI will not replace developers anytime soon, but a developer using Cursor will absolutely replace a developer who writes everything manually. The speed advantage is simply too massive to ignore.
